Bembridge Angling Club finally managed to hold their Open Cod boat Comp at the third attempt.
Despite a mid week forecast of dreadful conditions for the weekend, it actually turned out to be perfect with calm seas and sunshine after a frosty & foggy start.
The inaccurate forecast combined with the two postponements, probably accounted for the slightly reduced but still excellent entry of 90 anglers.
The significant success of the boats that went afloat on the Saturday was, unfortunately, not matched by competitors on the competition day when many boats struggled or failed entirely to find fish.
The fact that only 23 of the 90 competitors brought 31 Cod to the scales speaks for itself.
Club President Bob Cowley presented the prizes as follows:-
The most successful angler was Pete Bennett who went away £360 better off having won £300 for first position with a three fish bag of 46 lbs 8 ozs, sponsored by Bembridge Angling Club, the heaviest Cod prize of £35, sponsored by Bembridge Harbour Improvements Company, for a 18 lbs 2 ozs fish plus £25 sponsored by Dave Gawn, as his share of the prize for the heaviest pairs combined bag.
His pair, Paul Fincham contributed to their total combined bag of 62 lbs 4 ½ ozs to also take £25 sponsored by Ross Staplehurst.
?
Geoff Jones went away with the £200 prize also sponsored by BAC for his second placed 3 fish bag of 25 lbs.
?
Mike Wyatt’s 2 fish bag of 22 lbs 13 ozs was good enough to take the third place prize of £100 jointly sponsored by Charles Smallman plus Nick Challen Building & Renovation Services.
?
Such was the quality & quantity of the prize table that every competitor that brought a Cod to the scales went away with a worthwhile prize. Two lucky winners each went away with top range hand held VHF radios each valued at £125 having been donated by Cobra Marine Electronics. Other prizes included a £50 garment donated by Seasafe, a rod donated by Pryde of Cowes, a significant quantity of tackle sponsored by UK hooks, boat engine oil donated by Vectis Oils & tackle donated by Scotties.
?
The club particularly thanks all its sponsors in these difficult times, plus tackle shops for their assistance, competitors for their support & Kev Basham for invaluable publicity especially in light of the number of postponements.
