Pascall Atkey sponsored Open Cod Competition 2012

After several failed attempts to hold a boat fishing Bass open competition sponsored by Pascall Atkey & Son of Cowes & having discussed it with the sponsor, it was decided that there would be no further attempts to hold it this year and all prizes were transferred to our boat fishing Open Cod competition which was finally held on Sunday the 18th November.

The 77 anglers who entered were rewarded with perfect flat calm & sunny conditions.

Unfortunately the previous run of good catches did not materialize and several fancied boats failed to trouble the leader board.

Only 20 of the competitors weighed in a total of 25 cod.

Club President Bob Cowley presented the prizes in the absense of our kind sponsor Nick Roberts who was unfortunately not able to attend due to family commitments.

Martin Dye was one of the few skippers able to continue his recent good run of catches when he returned 3 fish to the scales for a total of 44lb 13 ½ oz  to take top spot.

His bag included the single heaviest cod brought to the scales which weighed 23lb 7 ½ oz.

Given the choice between the heaviest bag prize of £250 cash or the heaviest cod prize of an echo sounder valued at £350, he opted for the cash.

This meant that Harry Hayward received the sounder for his cod of 20lbs 6ozs which was the next heaviest rather than receiving the 3rd heaviest bag prize.

Phil Lewis caught 2 cod within the last 30 minutes of the competition to take the second place bag prize of £150 cash with a bag of 27lbs 3 ½ ozs.

Mark Tutton, fishing with Martin Dye, caught  2 cod for 19lb 7 oz to take the 3rd place prize of £150 cash.

Mark Smith also caught 2 cod for 17lb 2 ½ oz for 4th spot allowing him the choice of a magnificent array of prizes, several of which were valued over £80

Everyone who brought a cod to the scales received a prize.

Martin Dye & Mark Tutton caught a total of 5 cod for 64lb 4 oz to take the pairs prize of £25 each donated by BAC members Dave Gawn & Ross Staplehurst.

Phil Lewis ran a much appreciated raffle at the weighin.

BAC is extremely grateful to BAC member Nick Roberts, proprietor of Pascall Atkey & Son (Cowes) who generously donated prizes to the value of around £1000.

BAC would also like to thank Scotties (Newport & Sandown), East Cowes Tackle & UK Hooks for their help in displaying posters and collecting entries.

Thanks also to Kev Basham & the IW County Press for publicity.
