2016 Open Cod Competition Results (Reserve date of 11th Dec)

A really good weather forecast of light winds prompted 93 anglers to sign on for Bembridge Angling Club’s annual open Cod boat angling competition. Despite the good weather & the coloured water which is usually conducive to good Cod catches, the fish were conspicuous by their absence to the point that only 10 anglers brought a total of 12 Cod to the scales.

Peter Light’s 2 cod bag total weight of 27lb 7oz saw him walk away with the first prize of £250 sponsored by Sydenhams Builders & BAC.

Jim McKeen’s 2 cod bag total weight of 22lb 13.5oz gained him 2nd place prize of £150 sponsored by Pascall Atkeys

Martin Dye’s single Cod of 15lb 7 ½ oz gave him both 3rd place prize of £100 sponsored by Nick Challen & £50 for the heaviest single cod sponsored by Charles Smallman.

Alan Payn’s 1 Cod of 13lb 8.5oz took the £50 4th place prize.

All remaining competitors who had weighed in then had their pick of the extensive prize table:-

5- Jacob Grimaldi 1 Cod 11lb 14.5oz

6- Phil Mason 1 cod 9lb 12oz

7- Geoff Thorner 1 cod 9lb 11.5oz

8- John Davies 1 cod 8lb 7oz

9- Jonathan Gray 1 cod 7lb 13.5oz

10- Ian Mann 1 cod 6lb 0.5oz

Of the competitors that had pre-registered as being paired, there were no instances of both paired competitors weighing in so Jim McKeen having the highest weight of a registered pairing at 22 lbs 7 ozs, took the joint pairs prize with his pair Nick Cassford. They received £45 each sponsored jointly by BAC members David Gawn, Peter Knight & Ross Staplehurst.

No Junior weighed in.

The club thanks all its sponsors plus East Cowes Tackle, Scotties & UK Hooks for taking entries & Kev Basham/County Press for publicity.

The most unusual catch of the day was a large radio control model aeroplane found floating by one competitor.
